We adapted the Zero Waste Design Guidelines to Hong Kong, Singapore, and New York City. These are all high-density cities, with goals to reduce waste and increase circular material flows. While their urban context, infrastructure, and policies differ, each place has similar challenges.
We adapted the following strategies from the Zero Waste Design Guidelines to these High-Density Cities:
In collaboration with local architects, building managers and sustainability consultants, we identified how waste is managed in each city; building and urban context; waste reduction goals and policies; building regulations waste rules; green building rating systems waste incentives; and local challenges and initiatives. In addition to distilling strategies that were most critical for each city, we developed case studies showcasing best practices. We thank the Business Environment Council in Hong Kong and Renergii in Singapore for their collaboration, and the Hong Kong Design Trust for their support.
