We are in support of NYC’s plans to containerize waste but recommend adjustments for large buildings and walk-ups to better integrate waste containerization into streetscapes and improve labor conditions for building porters. See our recommendations on how to reduce the street space taken up and eliminate permanent bins on sidewalks for small buildings and large buildings.
Containerization should also be done in a way that incentivizes producing less trash and separating more recycling and organic waste, as outlined in our Vital City article. We have also been mentioned in the New York Times, The New Yorker, and Waste Dive on our recommendations.
DSNY: Permanent bins line sidewalks
A 6 unit building with a storefront will require at least 8 bins which totally fills the sidewalk space on a typical 25’ wide building.
CfZWD: Shared containers in street
Staging containers in the street frees up the sidewalk for pedestrians and street life.
