Our solutions include designing a centralized waste storage area for all commercial facilities, improving waste rooms on each residential floor, and making recommendations for efficient waste routes in the building.
For the eight commercial tenants, we worked alongside Foodprint Group to estimate waste for each business. We recommend waste management incentives and guidelines in commercial leases, which may specify waste tracking, use of volume reduction equipment, providing dishwashers so reusables dishware can be provided in pantries and kitchens, separation of food waste, among other best practices. For food service businesses, we recommend partnerships with food rescue organizations and the use of pulping or dewatering machines for organic waste to reduce volume.
For the residential component of the Peninsula, the development team wanted to provide an option for residents to be able to separate organic waste for composting and to ensure all organics would be managed efficiently and effectively. We researched organics processing equipment for pre-treatment and volume reduction, namely in-vessel composters and dry aerobic digesters, de-waterers, and shredders to process organic material. Several options for the movement of organics from in-apartment caddies to organics equipment were studied.
